South Haven is a charming port city just two hours outside of Chicago. Located on Lake Michigan, South Haven is a popular weekend getaway and vacation spot for Midwesterners to get out of the city and enjoy the beautiful outdoors. There is no shortage of things to do, whether you’re a family, couple, or solo traveler, there is something for everyone.
Go Hiking in Van Buren State Park
Van Buren State Park is a 400-acre park along the Lake Michigan shoreline just four miles south of South Haven. The park is home to beautiful beaches, scenic trails, and high dunes. Take a stroll through the park and have a picnic at one of their many shelters equipped with grills and picnic tables. If you love the outdoors, you can even camp here!
Get lunch at Clementines
Located in a former bank building, Clementines has a unique, cool atmosphere similar to an old-time saloon. Clementines is a South Haven favorite among frequent visitors. They serve up excellent seafood and modern American eats. Their tasty onion rings, friendly staff, and impressive beer list will keep you coming back!
Bike the Kal-Haven Trail
The Kal-Haven Trail, a former railroad bed, spans 33.5 miles linking South Haven to Kalamazoo, Michigan. The trail is used for hiking, biking, snowmobiling, horse-back riding, and cross-country skiing. To get to the trailhead, head to Bailey Street just west of Blue Star Highway.
Golf at Hawkshead Links Golf Course
Voted as one of the best places to play golf in the world by Golf Digest, Hawkshead Links, is a must-do for golf lovers. The course was designed by world-renowned golf architect Arthur Hills and is equipped with strategically placed rolling bunkers and sand traps perfect for golfers of all levels. Play an exciting game of golf then grab lunch at Hawkshead restaurant on-site.
Catch the sunset at the South Haven Lighthouse
First lit in 1872, the South Haven South Pierhead Light is a South Haven must-see attraction. Bring your camera and catch a dreamy sunset on the pier. The lighthouse is a short walk from downtown located at the entrance to the Black River on Lake Michigan.
Grab a brew at Three Blondes Brewing
Three Blondes Brewing is a local micro-brewery and restaurant in east downtown South Haven. It’s owned by three blonde South Haven sisters. The brewery offers 14 craft beers ranging from barrel-aged beers to blonde ale as well as cider and wine. The menu has tacos, pizza, burgers, sandwiches, salads, and more. Vegan and gluten-free options available.
Spend the day at Overhiser Orchards
Overhiser Orchards is a local U-Pick or we pick fruit and farm market. With thousands of fruit trees and wildlife, Overhiser Orchards offers beautiful scenic views. Take a tour of the farm, pick fresh apples, take a wagon ride, and pet farm animals. Overhisor Orchards is a perfect kid-friendly activity!
Grab martinis at Taste
In the mood for a fancy cocktail? Head on over to Taste, a small plates restaurant and martini bar. Enjoy melt-in-your-mouth steak bites, sushi, and fresh salad. This is a perfect date spot for couples.
Have dinner at Maria’s
If you’re looking for good pizza and authentic Italian cuisine, head to Maria’s for a nice dinner. Maria’s is a family-run restaurant in the heart of South Haven hosting a variety of delicious Italian eats.
Go wine tasting at Cogdal Vineyard
Last but definitely not least, you must go wine tasting at Cogdal Vineyard, my favorite winery in town. The seven-acre vineyard situated less than a mile away from Lake Michigan offers an award-winning wine selection. Order a wine flight to try a variety of delicious local wines.
