A Toy For Joy

Creating a Toy Drive for Joy: A Personal Journey

In 2019, my life took an unexpected turn when my four-year-old niece was diagnosed with leukemia. As she fought for her life, I spent weeks beside her in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Comer Children’s Hospital. This experience not only broke my heart for my niece but also opened my eyes to the struggles faced by numerous children battling severe illnesses.

During those difficult weeks, I noticed other children fighting similar battles, each with their own unique stories. I couldn’t help but feel the need to bring some joy to these kids and their families during the holiday season. Hence, the idea of a toy drive emerged.

In that first year, I organized a toy drive for the children in the hospital, and it was incredibly heartwarming to see the joy those 90 toys brought. Since then, this annual event has become a tradition.

My niece’s journey against cancer was challenging, but she eventually triumphed over the illness. Her victory inspired me to continue this initiative. The Child Life Program at Comer Children’s Hospital plays a crucial role in supporting the kids and their families during their hospital stay, providing much-needed interaction, support, and opportunities for play.

The holidays have become synonymous with giving and receiving gifts, and these toy drives hold a special place in ensuring that many children receive the gift of joy. This blog is a humble invitation to join us this year in spreading happiness and light during the festive season.
