Spreading Joy One Toy at a Time: A Personal Journey and our 6th Annual Tradition
In 2019, my life took an unexpected turn when my four-year-old niece was diagnosed with leukemia. As she bravely fought for her life, I spent weeks beside her in the Pediatric Intensive Care Unit at Comer Children’s Hospital. Those days were filled with heartbreak but also a deep admiration for her strength and the dedication of the caregivers at Comer. Alongside her, I saw countless children facing their own struggles, each with a unique story.
It was during those difficult weeks that I felt a calling to bring some joy to these resilient children and their families, especially during the holiday season. This inspired our first toy drive that year, gathering 90 toys that brought smiles to the faces of young patients. Since then, this event has become a cherished annual tradition, and I’m so proud to announce our 6th Annual Toy Drive for Comer Children’s Hospital!
My niece’s journey was challenging, but she triumphed over cancer. Her victory has continued to fuel my drive to make a difference through this initiative. The Child Life Program at Comer Children’s Hospital plays a crucial role in supporting these kids, providing playtime, comfort, and a sense of normalcy during their hospital stay. These toy drives are our way of adding to that joy and ensuring the kids feel the warmth and kindness of the season.
